The Aqara Hub M2 does not need to be in close proximity to sensors like those for doors or windows, but there are some considerations for its placement:
- The Hub M2 supports Zigbee 3.0, which allows it to connect up to 128 devices, but it may require Zigbee repeaters to extend the range and ensure stable connections, especially if the sensors are far away or in different rooms or floors.
- For optimal performance, it is recommended to place the hub in a central location to minimize the need for repeaters and ensure reliable connectivity.
- If you plan to install the hub in the basement (Keller), make sure it is within range of your sensors and other devices, or use Zigbee repeaters (such as Aqara smart plugs or wall switches) to extend the coverage area.
In summary, while the hub does not need to be right next to the sensors, a central location with potential use of repeaters can ensure better connectivity and stability.
I have completely decommissioned the M2 and now only use HomeAssistant with a Zigbee dongle as a "hub". HA is very compatible and runs locally. However, you would have to check whether your devices can run safely on it.
I have no problems with the Aquara products and can also integrate any other manufacturer's sensors. Ikea, for example, has super cheap solutions.
So if you have a Raspberry or MiniPc lying around, I can highly recommend HA as an alternative.
The Aqara Hub M2 supports the control of IR devices, including those from third-party providers, but with some limitations.
- The Hub M2 has 360° infrared control, which makes it possible to control existing IR devices such as fans, air conditioners and televisions by voice or via local automations.
- However, the IR function can only be used via the Aqara Home app and the corresponding voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. It is possible to read in certain commands for third-party devices through a self-learning function, but compatibility may vary and not all devices are supported.
For your specific request, the Vogels electric wall mount with IR receiver, it would be possible to control it via the Aqara Hub M2 and Alexa, provided that the device can be detected by the hub's self-learning function. However, it is advisable to check whether the specific device is compatible before purchasing.
You can configure almost nothing. (Language, volume, LED ON/OF/timer).
The wLan may be deactivated if you set it up via LAN and do not configure the wLan.
Unfortunately, we do not have any experience of this ourselves. Therefore, the question was forwarded to our community so that someone who knows about this can answer your question.
This is a so-called gateway that allows the various sensors of the Aqara product range to be integrated into a Smart Home network. For example, there are window and door sensors or temperature sensors. In order to use these e.g. in the Smart Home Eco System from Xiaomi, an Aqara gateway is then required, with which these sensors are then connected (via WLAN or Bluetooth).
