I have an iPhone X which just about fits across. I think it will be very tight with an iPhone 8 Plus or XS Max. It certainly won't work in portrait mode because the distance is too small. But the holder also has a thread on the back with which you can possibly set the smartphone to portrait format.

Hello Danman95 The Manfrotto has a minimum gap of 5.5cm approx. without tension. The iPhone is 5.86cm, so would be possible, but very tight. With a case it would fit very well as it would give the phone a bit more width. Greetings Saro5618

Yes, it can be used on a normal tripod with a quick release plate. Looks a bit strange, 1.20M tripod and then the mobile phone mounted on it. :-)
