Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - Red

I have had the N5800xm for a year now. After installing the firmware 31.xx about 6 months ago and being thrilled with it, I have now recently changed to FW release 50.xx. The device now has more touchscreen functions, and it reacts even faster than before!
The device has never crashed on me again (very rarely before).
The web browser is now mature and can be used well. The magnifying glass function and automatic full screen functionality are very useful and well thought out.
The input settings for vertical and horizontal are now saved independently.
The maps are now available for free download worldwide. I tried this out during my holidays in Brazil. It is true that the maps are not completely up to date, some/several streets are wrong, detours are sometimes indispensable. But it navigated me several times and finally always to the right destination, sometimes "blind", even at night. A huge advantage!
I also had a TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver with me, which I successfully linked to the mobile phone. In some cases, it found the position a little better and more accurately than the internal GPS receiver. However, these are nuances. Note The GPS settings can be set - somewhat confusingly and well hidden - under Settings - Phone - Applications - Navigation (i.e. not after starting the navigation software in the settings of the program).
The sound of the device is the best I've heard since I've had mobile phones. The XM chip is simply super! The speakers are well balanced. When you are lying in a hammock with the device above your chest, the stereo sound is really great and relaxing.
I also recommend the device because it has no moving wear parts.

The Nokia 5800MX is a super device with the best features at an unbeatable price!
The software is not fully developed in parts, but you get used to it...
I wouldn't give it away again!
size ideal...
screen ingenious super resolution and still readable even in direct sunlight. and not too bright in the dark thanks to the brightness meter ;D
would buy it again and again ;D
Owned the device since last week. I previously had the E71 plus Touch devices from HTC. I like the device because it's not such a huge thing. I want to take the device with me....
Looks smart, set up was hassle free, as was sharing data with PC. NO, it's not an iPhone. It's certainly in a different league. But it's good for me, especially for texting I find the large Qwerty keyboard practical. And I have big fingers. The camera is good for snapshots, and I was pleasantly surprised by the video mode. The only thing that annoyed me was the OVI player that I installed on the PC....which messed up all the album covers from my collection. Great price for a great device.
I've had the phone for 2 months now.
- Camera: High noise, only usable in very good light conditions.
- Menu navigation: Slow and rather cumbersome and unmanageable. I actually have rather fine hands, but I find the bar for scrolling too small and much too fast (finding a name with it is a game of patience).
+ sound great
+ handwriting recognition
I have had the 5800 for about 5 months now, so here's what I can say:
Touchscreen: ***
- The touchscreen is poorly implemented from my point of view. Especially when writing with the full Quertz keyboard, after 5 months I still can't manage to write a text message without making mistakes, i.e. for people with normal fingers this is a bad solution. However, the handwriting recognition works relatively well.
- It also has its problems with tilting, i.e. with changing the browser or the picture gallery.
Browser: *
- The browser crashes regularly. After 20 minutes of surfing, it suddenly disappears.
- I also find the browser tedious when entering passwords.
Overall: **
The phone has already reached its limit in terms of haptics, it feels cheap and crunches when you press it a little. The stylus also slips out of the phone. At the beginning, I had the feeling that this was a good solution, but I was wrong.
Another problem is that the complete phone sometimes hangs when you block or hang up a phone call, which is just tedious.
What I personally still find bad is the Nokia menu, if you are used to others (Sony Ericsson), it is almost impossible to get used to. However, that is my opinion.
Conclusion:
I would definitely not buy the phone again.
I've had the Nokia 5800 XM for 3 weeks now.
No problems so far!
+touchscreen
+Speakers (music quality 1A)
+Battery life (although long time music listener)
+Camera (Really good for 3.2 megapixels)
...
Conclusion: TOP price/performance ratio!
I didn't want an iPhone because Apple's marketing strategy goes against the grain. I'm a freedom-loving person and I don't like to be told what kind of contracts I have to sign with whom and in which store I can buy my apps.
Even if the handling of the Nokia is certainly not directly comparable with the iPhone, the Nokia offers a lot of advantages.
+Applications from everywhere, just install SIS File and it's good.
+Lately a Nokia (OVI) Store, where applications are offered under the supervision of Nokia.
+MMS on board from day one
+video recording on board from day one
+free choice of colour of the phone - there is not a black and a white one, but the white one only with 16GB to give more "status symbol character" so to speak.
+Meanwhile, there are countless free themes to download, some with really great icons.
+the battery life is between 3-4 days, which is a good value for me.
+If I don't have a charger with me, I always find someone who has a current Nokia device and lends me theirs for a short time.
+All 3.5 mm jack plugs are compatible with headphones. The remote control is simply hooked in between, so even my big Panasonic headphones can be used for "hands-free" talking.
+++ The price is hot, very much phone for the money !!!!
- All plastic
- Unfortunately, I also had a loudspeaker problem, Nokia Carepoint had a 2 week waiting period, then I fixed it myself, which is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars - something like this should simply not exist, no ifs and no buts. The devices should all have been recalled and only handed over to the customer after rectification.
- Multitouch is not supported, although the game SpaceDancer proves that multitouch is technically feasible with a resistive touchscreen.
- The stylus is of the cheapest kind, metal would be preferable here.
- Dust susceptib...
The most powerful touchscreen phone at the moment. Absolutely clear! The qualities do not reveal themselves on the first day, but gradually. Most of the useful functions are hidden in the options. That may not always be optimal, but it gives you a wonderful wonder bag feeling. It's nice to be able to discover something again in between.
With all the additional apps that can be installed, the 5800 is an infinitely versatile and compact companion. With all this brute performance, the expectations of the N97 are raised even higher. You can't do much better than that.
The camera is a joke compared to the other performance of the device, but that of the Apple Phone is fortunately even lousier. Moreover, the Nokia cam at least has an LED flash and a usable autofocus.
With the "Phone Torch" application, the photo light can also be used as a torch.
Other:
Workmanship is good. Not bad by any means, but not outstanding either.
The shape and size of the device is very good. You have something in your hand and don't have to hold an ultra-flat part to your ear with a cramped hand. The scope of delivery is excellent and exemplary.
I find the protective cover very good.
Does anyone know how to use the "torch" LEDs? for a longer time...
Greetings dani
I have had the "thing" for 3 weeks.
I am very satisfied so far, although I had to reset it to the factory settings after about 4 days.
The software "hung up".
The problem with the earpiece has not occurred so far.
- The Hady is super user-friendly, as you would expect from Nokia.
- The internal speakers have a great sound for their size. (an iPhone can't offer that)
- For me, the battery life is longer than I expected, as the device probably needs a lot of power.
All in all, I can only recommend this mobile phone, as it costs only about half as much as the iPhone without a subscription and has much more "inside".
Nokia has hit the jackpot with this one.
For me, the best Nokia mobile phone in a long time. I had an N82. Battery life zero. 5800 has a great battery life. I can only recommend it.
Very satisfied, good workmanship despite plastic.
Programmes open relatively quickly,
touchscreen works well.
And as usual with Nokia, all the technical refinements are there. Only GPS takes a long time or even doesn't work at all.
And multi-touch *evil look* is "missing".
No pictures can be taken at night with the camera.
There is no direct "play" button on the start screen.
Does anyone know where to make "suggestions for improvement" to the firmware?
I had it for four days then the receiver was broken poor quality
I am very satisfied with the nokia 5800. I have had it for 2 weeks and it runs perfectly.
+ very good loudspeakers super!!!
+ very good menu guidance
+ camera for 3 megapixel is actually very good
Can only recommend the nokia 5800 super händy from Nokia!!!!
Hello together
Unfortunately I can't recommend this phone, there seems to be a production defect in the phone which means that the loudspeaker for making calls has a wobble contact, as there is already a manual on the internet I assume that my device can't be the only one. You hear the caller sometimes loudly and then again softly. However, there is a video on how to bend the contacts of the speaker so that the problem is solved. However, the warranty is then lost.

The phone is actually not a bad choice in terms of operation, so I still give it 2 points in the rating. However, the workmanship of the device is cheap for the price. I can only recommend putting the money aside and waiting for the N97, which should also offer better workmanship for the expected sales price.
@milosch1:
The volume fluctuates during phone calls, so much so that you can only hear the other person "mumbling" in between. This seems to have happened with some buyers, and I also experienced the problem after about 1 week.
Apart from this production error, the phone is top-notch.
It's just a shame that Digitec couldn't exchange the 5800 immediately. Now I have to go on holiday with a mobile phone without a cam, etc. It's a shame. Too bad.
I've had the device for a good 2 weeks now...can't find anything negative so far...touchscreen reacts precisely with good feedback.call quality is also good..no clanking or annoying background noise.operation is simple and typical Nokia.small minus point is the internal memory..but is compensated for by the included 8GB card.all in all, I'm completely satisfied.
Until now in any case...let's see if it stays that way.
I have to agree with bluemanta and petarpantic, my 5800 is also in the repair after 10 days of use.
Same problem with the receiver. Therefore only 1 star.
If it wasn't for the problem with the earpiece, it would get 4 stars. symbian s60 5th runs stable and is intuitive to use, very handy size, internet via wifi is very fast, display is brilliant and sharp. The only minus point is the camera.
I've had it for about 2 weeks now. I was extremely satisfied at first. Everything is tiptop and really cool. Now, however, the loudspeaker for the ear goes haywire, the volume fluctuates from quiet to very loud, even though the volume is set to maximum.
That's no fun when you're on the phone! And this is what a phone should be able to do?
Normal loudspeaker and headset work perfectly. Nokia Helpline says it's the firmware, should wait for an update, release date unknown....
I am very satisfied with nokia 5800 compared to my colleague with his iphone.
Price/Performance->Top. Even more performance than price^
But I only have one question, when I want to download music via Nokia Music to my phone, it always says failed. Does anyone know why?
thanks in advance
i bought the new nokia 5800 about a week ago.
the phone has absolutely convinced me.
+ the touchscreen reacts precisely and gives great feedback.
+ the software (symbian) is top, runs clean and fast
+ the sound quality is great, no clanking ect.
+ the camera takes photos and films really well for 3 mpx
+ the price, simply unbeatable
- the connections (usb, headphones ect.) could have been better integrated
- the operating instructions supplied are insufficient.
but these are minor details. compared to other smartphones, the nokia 5800 comes out on top.
great device. My Xperia X1 has just been sold.
Price-performance is perfect.
+ very fast
+ very good functionality
+ good sound quality
+ can even be operated with one hand (which touch device can do that?)
- micro-usb and not mini-usb
- the stylus (although really not needed) is poor quality
- Realplayer cannot play Divx
A very good unit!!!
+ The speakers are great.
+¨Very easy to use (if you are used to Nokia you don't need a user manual!!)
+ Very good price-performance ratio (since you don't pay very much for the brand, like with the iPhone).
-There are not many (good) additional programmes, but what is not yet can still be.
Only to be recommended
@slmrvoge3
Market leadership or not.
Apple just messed up with the iphone and screwed many expectant customers!
That is now obvious after its market launch.
The many alleged water damages which are due to software errors and are not covered by the warranty.
The many defective batteries...have you heard about that too?
Condensation that forms...etc etc.
When I compare the touch keyboard of the 5800 Nokia with that of the iPhone, I notice that the Nokia keyboard is 10 times better, larger and therefore more user-friendly.
The size of the 5800 is also much more pleasant than that of the iPhone.
I really don't know what else speaks for the iPhone in this case, except that the Apple fanatics can't get away from it *grins
Back to rating :)...
For me, the Nokia is neither a clone nor anything else.
It's simply a very well-designed touchscreen phone that unfortunately, as sandjo already mentioned, has a very small internal memory in this day and age.
via the operating system:
Symbian Ltd ['s?mb??n] was formed in June 1998 through the spin-off of Psion Software and is a consortium of mobile phone manufacturers Nokia (47.9%), Ericsson (15.6%), Panasonic (10.5%), Samsung (4.5%), Sony Ericsson (13.1%) and Siemens (8.4%).
On 24 June 2008, Nokia announced in a press release that it would seek to acquire Symbian Ltd in its entirety and subsequently sell it to a newly formed Symbian Foundation.
...the company still exists, albeit under Nokia.
minus -
- I find the internal memory of 81Mb a little embarrassing and stingy in this day and age!
- the cam could also be better e.g. 5Megapixel instead of 3!
positive +
+ Nokia certainly has a good menu navigation
+ MMS it`s back ;)
the iPhone clone is certainly not bad - but it will not reach the sales figures and the simple operation - most users want a simple mobile phone - I also think HSDPA and GPS are great but the "normal" user is not interested - so forget the stupid sayings like the iPhone is history - the envy that a computer manufacturer has the currently most popular mobile phone in the world in its range is not to be overlooked:-) you don't have to buy it but the sales figures are a big indication that Apple has started exactly where other manufacturers have failed...
Adios Iphone and bye bye Apple.... Soon the 5800 will be joined by the N97 !!! Then the Iphone HISTORY !!! ( it already is now )
Outstanding the two new ones from Nokia
TOP TOP TOP!
mobile phone right today when it was released, could hardly wait the whole day!
now i have it in my hands and i have to say, it has exceeded my expectations. it is not as thick as i thought. Symbian is a very great OS, and the apps included are also great, especially Maps. I downloaded Opera Mini separately and surf at home via WLAN. Very good and fast connection! Tomorrow I'll test the 3.5G, I'm sure it will be quite good too!
Compared to the iphone, technically speaking, clearly better! and the price is unbeatable!
great phone i think the iphone has had it. the only argument iphone owners bring up is: "the nokia 5800 xpress is a lump of plastic" but since i rate functionality and not material i give it 5 stars
