Since 01.01.2017, Apple is no longer allowed to sell devices with the Lightning interface. Am I therefore correct in assuming that this device now has a USB interface?
I am pretty sure that this assumption is wrong. After a short search, I found a few references to such a regulation, but all the articles are from November 2015. In addition, this regulation, if it really has a hand and foot, only seems to come into force from summer 2017 (TA 25.11.2015), which does not mean that it will have any effect. In addition, from a purely technical point of view, the Lightning connector is also a USB interface, just a proprietary one from Apple ;).
No, Apple would rather pay the buses for it. It's cheaper for them than foregoing accessory sales :)
