Will Google also force me here with adverts? Need something like a Chromecast to use Plex, but am strongly turning away from Google as they do everything possible to degrade their own products.

As far as we know, the product displays recommendations and adverts in the start menu, similar to the Chromecast with Google TV. You can still use it for Plex, but the adverts in the interface cannot be completely deactivated.
