Haflinger foals receive a name at birth that includes the initial letter of their father or mother. Their coat is always chestnut, with a mane and tail made of light hair. Sometimes they have markings or blazes as head markings, but otherwise, they are generally solid-colored. When fully grown, they reach a height of 138 to 155 centimeters. Although the required height for a horse is at least 148 centimeters, which usually classifies Haflingers as ponies, they are actually a horse breed.
