This tool removes AI from your Mac

The command-line program RemoveMacAI disables all AI functions on macOS 27 in one go. This frees up about 12 gigabytes of storage space.

Apple removed the main toggle for disabling Apple Intelligence in macOS 27. Instead, the options are spread across several settings, some even hidden in Screen Time. Even when certain functions are disabled, models remain on the SSD by default.

Open-source tool RemoveMacAI provides a solution. It disables Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension and summary features. It then deletes any local AI models and prevents them from being downloaded again. To do this, it installs a profile in Device Management. This way, AI features will remain disabled even after system updates.

According to System Settings, Apple Intelligence takes up 23 GB of storage on this Mac mini.

According to the developer, AI models use only 12 gigabytes (GB) of memory. And yet, some users see over 30 GB allocated to Apple Intelligence in the Storage settings. Checking myself on a new M6 Mac mini, it’s 23 GB. That’s a significant chunk for the base configuration with a 256 GB SSD.

RemoveMacAI is a command-line program that you can run in the Terminal without installing it. To do this, copy the following command. After doing so, you can confirm that you want to disable AI functions by entering «y».

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/omlahore/RemoveMacAI/main/install.sh | bash

Note: the tool has received numerous positive reviews and is recommended by various tech websites. I’ve tried it myself, and it worked. However, if the author’s GitHub account were ever hacked, it could pose a potential security risk. As a result, proceed at your own risk.

In my test, the program deleted only 1.1 GB, according to its own reports. However, available storage actually increased by more than 12 GB. Before the test, I had the Siri AI beta enabled. It’s currently only available if you change your system language to English in Switzerland. Foundation Models are likely already stored locally, however.

If you want to re-enable Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in future, RemoveMacAI lets you revert to the original state using the Terminal command «removemacai revert». Alternatively, you can simply remove the installed profile under System Settings > Device Management. This way, AI functions will no longer be blocked and can be reactivated. The models will be automatically reinstalled in the background.

My fingerprint often changes so drastically that my MacBook doesn't recognise it anymore. The reason? If I'm not clinging to a monitor or camera, I'm probably clinging to a rockface by the tips of my fingers.
