Yes, the DS124 is fully compatible with Time Machine and can easily create Mac backups. The installation effort is minimal and comparable to a Time Capsule. All you have to do is create a shared folder on the DS124, create a Time Machine user and activate the SMB settings. Then recognise the DS124 in the Mac system settings under Time Machine and connect with your login data. The maintenance effort is also low. It is recommended that you set a storage quota for the Time Machine folder so that the hard drive does not fill up. Otherwise, the backup runs automatically as with the Time Capsule - after the first complete backup, macOS only backs up the changed data. You can also restore your Mac directly from the NAS backup if required.

You always need an internal hard drive installed in the NAS, as it only has a hard drive slot for a 3.5" SATA HDD or 2.5" SATA SSD. A 6 TB hard drive connected via USB cannot be used as main storage in the NAS. Although the NAS has two USB 3.2 ports, these are intended for external devices such as backup drives, not for use as main storage. You can access the internal hard drive from anywhere if the NAS is in the network and has been configured accordingly (e.g. with remote access via Synology services). However, it is not possible to access drives connected via USB as main storage.

The hard drive can be connected to the NAS via USB without having to remove it from the housing. The NAS has two USB 3.0 ports to which external USB hard drives can be connected directly, for example to perform backups or data transfers. It is therefore not necessary to remove the hard drive from the housing.

Your question is related to a single disk device, the DS124 can't have more than one disk at any given moment. If you choose a diskstation supporting 4 disks, you can insert different size disks, but if you want a single volume the total volume will be based on the smallest size disk, the others will only be used at that same capacity. So if you have 2x 4TB and 2x 8TB, your total space will be based on 4x 4TB. You can, however, allocate two separate volumes of 2 disks, one of 2x 4TB and one of 2x 8TB. This may not be what you desire but it is possible. Based on a single volume as stated, if you replace the 2x 4TB at a later date with 8 TB disks, the diskstation will automatically adjust to maximise the volume size to 4x 8TB.

This is an empty housing, you have to buy the hard drives separately. You can install a 3.5" or 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD drive.

Compatibility with Ashampoo Backup Software Synology DS124 NAS is designed for use with Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which supports various backup solutions, including Synology's Hyper Backup. Although compatibility with Ashampoo Backup software is not explicitly mentioned, the DS124 can generally be used with third-party backup tools if they support network-attached storage (NAS) devices. For compatibility with NAS devices, please refer to the Ashampoo documentation. Compatibility with WD Red Plus 3.5" 6TB SATA hard drive Synology DS124 supports a single 3.5-inch SATA drive bay, which means it can accommodate a WD Red Plus 3.5-inch 6TB SATA hard drive. The DS124 supports drives up to a maximum capacity of 108TB per volume, so a 6TB drive would be fully compatible. The most important specifications of the Synology DS124 - CPU: Realtek RTD1619B quad-core processor with 1.7 GHz - RAM: 1 GB DDR4 (not upgradeable) - Drive bay: 1 x 3.5"/2.5" SATA - Network: 1 x Gigabit Ethernet - USB ports: 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 - Power consumption: Approximately 10.69 W - Warranty: 2-year warranty, extendable to 4 years.

To use the Synology DS124, you do not need any special software as it is compatible with Windows 10. You can connect and use it directly with your Windows system via the network. However, Synology offers the Synology Drive software to help you synchronise and share files. This software is available for Windows and can be optionally installed to utilise additional functions.

Even with an HDD, no (fan) noise is perceptible to me. It would probably be even less likely with an SSD. The power consumption would probably also be lower with an SSD. I don't know any values.

I was able to do some research and the cheaper and "normal" models do not have a SAS controller built in. There is also no adapter for it that I know of. Only much larger RackStation models that can process SAS. One idea would be to build a simple PC with a SAS controller, then you can also "build" a NAS yourself. Otherwise, I would be happy to pass the question on to someone with experience. Alternatively, you can ask such a question in our Community, where you can usually reach a wider audience. The Nas is actually built for continuous operation! - I personally now operate three different Synology Nas and start them up as required. However, if one of them is used as a mail server, for example, you would have to leave the device running all the time.

The manufacturer does not provide any clear information here. However, the hard drive should be installed. If this is not the case, the installation can be done very quickly with a screwdriver. Synology has a software solution for backing up photos from smartphones: Synology Photos For further information and advice, I recommend contacting our customer service team directly: Contact us
